The solar system

It is a group of planets and astronomical objects which are bound to the sun’s gravity field. There a several planets which orbit the son, one of which is the Earth. The earth has it’s own satellelite which is the moon, a small planet which orbits around in the earth’s gravity field. There are four small planets which are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. All these planets are composed of rocks and divers metals and are therefore classified as terrestrial planets. The other four planets in our system are gas giants and much bigger than the Earth. Jupiter and Saturn are mainly composed of Hydrogen and Helium and they are the biggest in the system. Uranus and Neptune are the two furtherst planets orbiting the sun and are called ice giants due to there frozen ice, water, ammonia and methane composition.

There is an asteroide belt inbetween Mars and Jupiter, full of rock and metal asteroids. There are also what are called dwarf planets near Neptune. These are called planets because they are big enough to have there own gravity field. There are five of them : Ceres, Pluto, haumea, Makemake and Eris. The solar system is also full of comets, centaurs and interplanetary dust which move around. Six planets and three dwarf planets have there own natural satellites, which are called moons, named after the earth’s moon.

The sun is an enourmous star composed of hot plasma. It is basically a great ball of fire. It is over 100 times bigger than the earth. It orbites in the center of the milkyway. Without this star life on earth would not be possible, it is it’s rays which heat our planet and enable our living conditions. However it is so far away that the light takes over 8 minutes to reach us from the sun.
